Sonshine's Petrie Island Recreational Initiatives and Training

Mandate

The purpose of the SPIRIT Program is to facilitate the implementation of nature-based physical activities and recreational programs at the Petrie Island site, specifically targeting children and youth, including those with special needs, adults, families, seniors and the community at large.

Objective

The main objectives of the SPIRIT Program within the Sonshine Community Ministries framework are stipulated in the following fashion:

To improve the health and well-being of our children, youth , adults, and seniors including those with special needs
To raise the profile of the benefits of physical activity and increase knowledge and awareness of these benefits
To increase the number and variety of physical activities/opportunities that are non-threatening and non-competitive, reducing      personal, physical and social barriers to participation in physical activities
To promote healthy lifestyle choices that may lead to lifelong involvement in physical activity
To provide bridged links, through physical activity, to other opportunities within the community, and to establish a strong      community network and effective partnerships with other service providers
To effectively and responsibly make use of the Petrie Island site and its natural amenities
